MODUNA

Compact robotic cell for fast, off-site drywall panel fabrication and assembly automation

Moduna investigates the automation of drywall panel assembly for internal partitions by integrating algorithm-based robotic control, customized tooling, and parametric wall configuration starting from a CAD input. The system results in a robotic cell that converts raw drywall and aluminum profiles into labeled segments, ready for transport to the construction site.

At the computational level, the project addresses the automated division of internal walls into predefined modules.
At the fabrication level, it tackles the challenge of integrating the entire assembly process into a compact setup using a single 6-axis robotic arm equipped with just two end-effectors: one for pick-and-place operations, and the other for screwdriving.
Unlike traditional on-site manual assembly, Moduna offers a faster, more controlled, and efficient alternative.

The process begins with the robotic placement of the metallic frame, followed by drywall panels using the same multifunctional end-effector, which combines radial mechanical grippers and vacuum grippers (bars).
A tool change allows the robot to switch to auto-feeding screwdrivers to secure the panels to the frame.
A key step involves flipping the two assembled components in synchronization with the full rotation of the inclined assembly table.
This movement enables the robot to place the flipped parts, return to the initial position, and repeat the process for the subsequent panel.

Moduna delivers an efficient off-site method for internal wall assembly, offering a competitive solution for large-scale construction projects.
It addresses common challenges in manual labour such as time constraints, high costs, material damage, and assembly inaccuracies.
Computationally, it also anticipates the final arrangement of segments, ensuring an organized, error-free installation.
