Woodot

A project by INDEXLAB – Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with Sigma Ingegneria, Eurostratex, and Homberger.

Woodot is an innovative system for performing multiple operations on large, custom-shaped laminated timber beams. It consists of a robotic arm with six degrees of freedom mounted on an automated guided rover, equipped with a vision system integrated with artificial intelligence. The system can switch between different tools designed for specific tasks such as wood defect removal, chainsaw cutting, painting, sanding, and edging.

Thanks to a deep learning model developed specifically for wood characteristics, the robot can recognize surface defects, categorizing them based on their size and position on the analyzed component. The robotic arm, equipped with a milling machine, can autonomously remove each identified defect, ensuring superior quality control compared to manual techniques and optimizing the entire production chain.

The wheeled robotic system can also perform autonomous chainsaw cuts: thanks to AI algorithms, the robot can identify the area of interest and determine the necessary cut type for the insertion of structural metal plates, further automating the production process of structural wooden elements.

The rover's flexibility also allows for the application of impregnating agents and paints through dosing nozzles and brushes, as well as sanding and edging operations on laminated beams with customized profiles.

Woodot, with its high versatility in both operations and mobility, aims to automate the most physically and mentally exhausting tasks while ensuring safe cooperation with operators.

LokAlp

A project by INDEXLAB, with LEGNOTECH

LokAlp is an innovative system of wooden building blocks that introduces a novel approach to modular architecture. Thanks to LokAlp, it is possible to create walls, facades, floors, and beams with high flexibility, significantly simplifying the assembly and disassembly of components. This system incorporates advanced technical solutions, including CNC machining performed by robotic arms and augmented reality visors. All of this enables the configuration and construction of complex spaces in a sustainable manner.
